THE BLING THING
Our ideas of gold are changing
by KOD Staff
Once seen as a symbol of taste and elegance, gold was exclusive – belonging only to people with status. From royal coronation crowns to Snoop Dog’s chains, gold has redefined itself. Adopted by hip hop culture, gold is now about bling. Widespread availability means it is used to imply status, as opposed to illustrate it. Seen by many as vulgar and mainstream, this hasn’t stopped brands, such as Dolce and Gabanna, using the color in their FW13/14 collections – hinting that gold could still make a comeback to its original luxury audience.
