Oil on Linen
About the Artist
Hugh Mendes' work mainly consists of paintings of obituaries and political events, sourced from newspaper cuttings. By turning these everyday scraps into oil painted icons, the artist facilitates the exploration of contemporary themes and concerns, whilst also referring back to trompe l’oile and art history. Hugh Mendes’ small scale portraits appear to art collections worldwide, including Jerry Hall, London, Mauritz Huntzinger, Frankfurt, Peter Nobel, Zurich, Steve Shane, New York and private collections in China, Germany, UK & USA. Alongside this his work is regularly exhibited at Charlie Smith, London, and Gusford|Los Angeles.
